Intake of High Producing Holstein Cows Grazing Pasture or Fed a Total Mixed Ration

چکیده
(week 4). Intake was estimated in week 4 by dosing twice daily with 5 g Cr 2 O 3 for 10 days. Fecal samples were collected twice daily on days 7 to 11 of Cr 2 O 3 dosing, with pre-grazing pasture being sampled on days 6-10 of dosing. Fecal output, calculated from fecal chromium concentrations, and in vitro digestibility (IVDMD) were used to calculate intake (Parker et al. 1989). The intake of cows fed TMR in confinement was measured by weighing feed offered and refused on 5 days. Nutrient composition of pasture and TMR was determined according to AOAC procedures. Data were analyzed using the general linear models procedure of SAS (1990), with a pre-trial covariate and the repeated measures procedure applied to data collected across transition and production periods.

Metabolic and endocrine profiles and hepatic gene expression of Holstein cows fed total mixed ration or pasture with different grazing strategies during early lactation
BACKGROUND In dairy mixed production systems, maximizing pasture intake and total mixed ration (TMR) supplementation are management tools used to increase dry matter and energy intake in early lactation. The objective was to evaluate metabolic and endocrine profiles and hepatic gene expression of Holstein cows fed either TMR ad libitum (without grazing) or diets combining TMR (50 % ad libitum D...
متن کاملPerformance of lactating dairy cows fed varying levels of total mixed ration and pasture.
Two, 8-week experiments, each using 30 lactating Holstein cows, were conducted to examine performance of animals offered combinations of total mixed ration (TMR) and high-quality pasture. Experiment 1 was initiated in mid October 2004 and Experiment 2 was initiated in late March 2005. Cows were assigned to either a 100% TMR diet (100:00, no access to pasture) or one of the following three formu...
متن کاملMilk production of fall-calving dairy cows during summer grazing of grass or grass-clover pasture.
Milk production of fall-calving dairy cows during subsequent summer grazing was evaluated in two consecutive years using a total of 80 mid- to late-lactation Holsteins. Cows calved during September and October and grazed from April to August in the following year. In yr 1, 27 cows grazed a native grass pasture and 13 cows grazed a native grass-clover mixed pasture containing 26% red clover and ...
متن کاملNutritional limitations to increased production on pasture-based systems.
The constraints to high levels of milk production imposed by a high-quality-pasture diet, and development of feeding strategies to overcome these limitations, were examined by modelling the nutritional status of New Zealand Friesian and North American Holstein-Friesian dairy cows grazing high-quality pasture. The Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) was used to predict sensitivit...
متن کاملInvited review: Genetic considerations for various pasture-based dairy systems.
Pasture-based dairy systems use grazing to supply significant percentages of the dry matter intake of cows and heifers. Such systems vary from those for which pasture is used only as a supplemental feed for cows primarily fed a total mixed ration to those for which pasture is the primary source of dry matter for the herd. Cows that are optimal in a pasture system share many general characterist...
